Description
Have you ever noticed patterns in the ways people think or behave?
Have you questioned your own memories?
Does it ever seem like people see the world completely differently than you do?

Psychology is a diverse field that, at the most basic level, seeks to understand human behavior and mental processes. Your efforts in this class will help you understand humans’ thoughts, feelings, and actions, and will prepare you to study scientifically these topics.

You can expect me to come to class prepared, interested in your experiences, and concerned with what you are gaining from this course. I will help you practice thinking like a psychologist utilizing readings, demonstrations, and active learning. I am available to answer questions or offer advice about being a psychology major.

I expect you to take ownership of your learning. I realize that you have multiple classes, a job or extra commitments, but you must come prepared by purposefully completing readings and assignments. Research shows that participating in class activities and discussion helps individuals to learn & to retain material deeply (rather than just memorizing it).

How best does a student succeed in this course?  Actively read (e.g., take notes on readings, make outlines, quiz yourself, and go back to re-read sections you’re unsure about). In class, take notes on what I say and the examples I provide.

Class time is used to amplify, to explain and to demonstrate the material from the readings or to present new material.

Statewide dual credit classes are college-level courses taught at the high-school level by trained high-school
teachers. Course learning objectives are developed by Tennessee high school and college faculty in order to
ensure alignment with post-secondary standards. All statewide dual credit courses are approved by the
Consortium for Cooperative Innovative Education before they can be offered as a part of the state’s current
pilot program (see Public Chapter 967 for more information).

All students enrolled in a statewide dual credit course take the online challenge exam, which is used to assess mastery of the postsecondary-level learning objectives. Students which meet or exceed the exam ‘cut score’ receive college credit that can be applied to any Tennessee public postsecondary institution. Exam scores are reported on the high school transcript to ensure postsecondary credit is accurately awarded but are not used in any state accountability measures.
