February 12 - Semicolons
 
Use a semicolon between independent clauses that are closely related if they are not jointed by and, but, for, nor, or, so, or yet
 
**The semicolon takes the palce of the comma and the conjunction.**
 
Ex: First, I had a sandwich and a glass of milk; then I called you for the homework assignment.
 
A semicolon can take the place of a period to join two or more simple sentences.
 
Ex: Eric looked out at the downpour; then he put on his raincoat and boots.
 
Use a semicolon between independent clauses joined by a conjunctive adverb or transition.
 
Ex: Emma felt shy; however, she soon made some new friends.
 
 
Finish reading "The Possibility of Evil" story.

February 13 -Write the following sentences adding semicolons where needed.
 
1. Art in Mexico is varied and distinctive and it exhibits a strong Spanish influence.
 
2. The Zapotec and Mixtec peoples of Puebla and Oaxaca have a long history of artistic craftsmanship the Mixtec were considered master goldsmiths.
 
3. The Mixtec built a tremendous pyramid in Cholula it was the largest pyramid of the ancient world.
 
4. During the thirteenth century, stone was a favorite medium of these peoples they also used bone, gold, jade, and wood.
 
5. Much of the art from southern Central America was destroyed during the years of the Spanish conquest but several historical manuscripts survive today.
 
We will take notes over "Theme." At the end of the notes, we will complete the practice part of the lesson also. All notes and the three practice stories should be together! You must include ALL EXAMPLES in your notes!

A semicolon (rather than a comma) may be needed to separate independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction when the clauses contain commas.

Use a semicolon between items in a series if the items contain commas.

Pull up the "Theme Worksheet 4." Read each story and answer the two questions at the end of the stories. You should put these on a separate sheet of paper than your notes, and you should label the paper with "Theme Worksheet 4." Put all answers in complete sentences.

 

Pull up the "Understanding Theme with Fables Review." You may put these answers on the sheet with "Theme Worksheet 4," but these answers should be labeled as well. These answers should also be in complete sentences.

Watch the video on "Irony" and complete the notes chart as you watch. The notes chart will require you to tell the three types of irony, a definition of each, and an example of each.

 

We will discuss your findings after everyone has finished. You will have the opportunity to make any changes to your sheet at that time.

 

You will get the handout "Check for Understanding" and tell which type of irony is being used in each example.

 

You will then get the handout "Isn't it Ironic?" and read over it. Then you need to create your own example of each type of irony and add it to the handout. You MAY NOT google an example to use. You MUST create your own.

ACT English Practice Questions 8-11 - Explain why you choose each answer you choose. Turn in the answers and explanations before moving on.

 

Get the blue literature books and turn to page 428. Use the book to answer the "Previewing Texts" portion of your handout. You should complete parts 1 and 2. 

 

Use your computer to finish defining the words for the story. Then write a sentence using the word in context. If you don't understand the definition given to you the first time, you may need to go a little further. For example, if you google the definition for marauder, you may find that it means "someone who marauds." However, I don't think you know what maraud means so you need to look it up as well. Therefore the correct definition to put for that word is "someone that raids or loots things from others."

 

Listen to the short story "The Interlopers." 

 

Complete the rest of the story handout that you started yesterday. Be sure to follow AlLL directions for each section of the handout.
