What is a CLAIM? What is a COUNTERCLAIM?
 
Each person will get a handout with a set of four different scenarios on it. Read each of the scenarios and highlight the claim and the counterclaim (each in a different color) for each one.
 
When everyone has finished, find another person that has your same set of scenarios and compare your answers. 
 
When everyone in the group has come to a consensus (and had your answers checked by me), your group will get a large sheet of paper and write your claim and counterclaim for each of your four scenarios on the paper. You need to number your scenarios as well.
 
When all groups have their sheets hanging on the wall, you will walk around and write down the claims and counterclaims for each of the scenarios given. There should be twenty of them all together.

We are getting ready to read and study Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" Speech. In preparation for that, you have three things to do:
 
1. Watch the following video of him giving the "I Have a Dream" speech to get a feel for the power that Dr. King is able to put forth by using his words.
 
2. Write about your own dream using Dr. King's style. Copy the sentence starters onto a sheet of paper and them finish them:

You may type both of these assignments or you may hand write both of these assignments. However, it should all be turned in before you leave class today and there will be a grade taken. This grade will not be able to be made up if you choose to not do the work; in other words, your 0 will stand.
 
Keep in mind that we have student-led conferences coming up on Thursday and if you choose to take a 0 for today's work, your parent will be notified!

What is one thing that should be included in every body paragraph of your essay?
 
CFA #2 - Sub didn't give so we are going to take it today...
 
When everyone finishes the CFA, you will reconvene in your pairs to finish your paragraphs. After your paragraphs are completed, you will transcribe your paragraph onto a large sheet of butcher paper and hang them around the room. We will discuss each of the body paragraphs to make sure it follows the correct form and contains all the pertinient information, including at least one piece of textual evidence.
 
Each group will post their paragraphs around the room. After all paragraphs are posted, you will stay with your partner and walk around the room to read everyone else's paragraphs. You're looking to make sure that each paragraphs follows the TIDE form.

Bell Work
Thinking back to the story "Lamb to the Salughter," what is one plea that Mary Maloney might use to try to get off of murder charges?
 
You are going to write a closing argument to defend Mary Maloney and prove that she is "NOT GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY"!
 
You will receive three handouts: a graphic organizer, a rubric for grading, and a rough draft paper (with a self-reflecting checklist at the end).
 
We will go over the rubric before beginning.
 
We are going to watch the clip of Atticus Finch's closing argument in To Kill a Mockingbird.
 
You will work in the following pairs to complete the graphic organizer only:
     Phoebe Sanchez and Grace Parrish
     Carlee Poteet and Tayquise Cason and Billy Villarreal
     Victor Fitzgerald and Anette Barranco
     Kaylee Proctor and Diego Valencia
     Adriana Sanchez and Emily Slover
 
Complete the graphic organizer together, making sure that the graphic organizer has more than enought information to complete a five paragraph essay. You will need to gather at least three quotes from the story that support that your client was of a diminished mental capacity at the time of the crime and is no longer in that mental state, in order to avoid prison time.
 
You are ready to begin your rough draft essay. You may break up and begin writing it alone. It should be five paragraphs, and it should begin with an introduction to the plea of temporary insanity. The second, third, and fourth  paragraphs will be for each of the three quotes you chose as your evidence. You should include (for each quote) how each relates to Mrs. Maloney's plea for temporary insanity. Your ending paragraph will summarize your points and convice the judge/jury that your client should not go to prison for this crime. Once your rough draft is complete, you will use the checklist at the end of the sheet to make sure your draft has everything it needs.
